Light-hearted and hilarious, this documentary (hosted by British comedian and Monty Python alumnus John Cleese) doubles as a brilliant introduction to the world of wine.
A Year in Burgundy
The winemaking process is chronicled throughout a whole year in this documentary, which examines the work of several winemakers in the celebrated French wine region of Burgundy.

This documentary film, set in the Langhe hills of Italy, tells the story of a group of winemakers who made Barolo become one of the most famous wines in the world.

Maynard James Keenan of the band Tool leads a double life: this film tracks his appreciation of music and of his other passion: winemaking.

An engaging documentary about the explosive popularity of Argentine Malbec, this film also spells out how wine has become a force in South American pop culture.
From Ground To Glass 2006
No grapes, no barrels and no money – just a dream to make a little wine. That’s all Rob DaFoe had on his side with harvest just around the corner. This is a story of transformation, not only of grapes, but of those who turn them into wine. The documentary film uses footage of DaFoe’s winemaking journey with commentary from both up-and-coming and veteran winemakers including Au Bon Climat’s Jim Clenenden and Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars’ Warren Winiarski. DaFoe has no wine experience but he tries to make two barrels of his own Syrah. It was filmed on a small budget in and around the Santa Ynez Valley. The film has been well received in both wine and film circles and was an official selection of the 2006 Santa Barbara International Film Festival.

Based on a true story follows three Italian winemakers and chefs who are attempting to stop the industrialization of their beloved hometown of Langhe.
Merlove
Merlot, once deemed unsophisticated by the wine elite, is proving it is worthy of recognition. In the wake of the Sideways Merlot-bashing epidemic, this doc featuring an animated bottle of Merlot offers an insightful look into the inner workings of the industry.

Wine is now a worldwide obsession, and this documentary explores how globalization and international capitalism is affecting the art and craft of wine.
Natural Resistance (2014)
Natural Resistance is an Italian-French documentary made by Jonathan Nossiter. The film tells the story of four Italian winemakers (Elena Pantaleoni, Stefano Bellotti, Giovanna Tiezzi and Corrado Dottori) who decided to marry an ecological and progressive viticulture in full respect of nature and its times: however, for years they have had to face laws restrictive, quirky and fight against the endless bureaucracy of controls imposed by the European Union and associations of wine growers. The scenes of the vineyards alternate footage of the Cineteca di Bologna, which reveal the profound and ancient relationship between culture and agriculture.
No Wine Left Behind 2011
When Marine Sergeant Josh Laine returned from fighting in Iraq to his native Livermore, CA, he couldn’t find a job anywhere. When a girlfriend got him into wine, he decided to take a crack at winemaking and with the help of the other Marines that he served with, Lavish Laines Winery was born. The winery has since become a place where returning veterans can find a job, camaraderie, and a sense of purpose. The film follows Josh and his fellow vets as they try to take the winery from a garage start-up to a fully-fledged operation and, in the process, explores the challenges vets face in transitioning back to civilian life.

Rupi del vino (2009)
The film is a documentary tribute to the “heroic viticulture” of Valtellina, its fine wines, the ancient winemaking tradition of terraces and dry-stone walls, exploring ancient landscapes with the contribution of Mario Soldati from the book “Adventure in Valtellina” and those of the eighteenth-century agronomist Pietro Ligari from the manuscript “Agricultural reasoning”. The film was created to raise awareness and promote the historical, cultural and viticultural richness of the territory on the occasion of the UNESCO candidacy of the Valtellina terraces. The largest terraced mountain wine-growing area in Europe.
SOMM: Into the Bottle
An untraditional sequel to SOMM that is more of a spiritual continuation than a direct follow-up, this documentary provides viewers with intimate access to the insights of some of the most acclaimed sommeliers around the globe.

Jason Wise has done it again with his third installment of SOMM, this time gathering three of the greatest legends in wine to drink rare bottlings and share what got them hooked on wine.
Vino amaro (Sour Grapes) 2016
Documentary on the auction market for fine and rare wines focused on a counterfeiter who befriended the wealthy and powerful buyers and sold millions of dollars of fraudulent wine through the best auction houses.
Vintage – The Winemaker’s Year 2010
Produced by Silverthorn Films of Charlottesville, Virginia, Vintage examines the factors that make Virginia unique amongst the wine producing regions of the United States and explores why two hundred years after Thomas Jefferson’s attempts to cultivate grapes at Monticello the region is flourishing as a producer of quality wines.
Filmed and presented in high definition, the narrative of the film is comprised of two intertwining storylines – the tale of the wine industry’s rise from humble beginnings and the creation of the state’s 2008 vintage. Vintage is an observational style documentary with the players and places of the Monticello Wine Region in Central Virginia serving as its main characters.
Vino Veritas – An American Wine Story 2014
There are plenty of obsessions in the world, but few endeavors attract as much devotion as wine. American Wine Story is a documentary about oenological aficionados who have taken their obsessions to the extreme, chasing their dreams with a bottle in one hand and a corkscrew in the other. Directed by David Baker and made by Three Crows Productions in Oregon, the 81-minute film blends the stories of a dozen winemakers around the country who took the risk to shed their old lives and devote themselves to wine. It continuously raises the question: ”If you finally discovered your true calling, would you have the courage to start over?”
