Arianna Occhipinti is the warrior princess that led the renaissance of the southern side of Sicily. The ‘natural woman’ of Italian wine, Arianna, has started this fantastic project in 2004, after finishing her studies as a winemaker in Milan, applying biodynamic farming principles since the very beginning, for a more eco-conscious and authentic approach to local grape varietals. Siccagno is her interpretation of Nero D’Avola and it represents the enchanting land where it is produced: wild, intense, gentle, passionate, warm and full of contrasts. With a concentrated ruby red color with purple reflections, the wine offers a wide, mediterranean bouquet of beautiful intensity, with notes of black cherry, rosemary, sage, wild red flowers, mirth, blueberry, leather, scorched earth, balm, pencil case and a hint of dark chocolate. Palate is elegant, warm and fresh at the same time, the most mouthwatering version of Nero D’Avola I have ever experienced with a never-ending taste of sour cherry, ripe peach, chocolate, and a plush tannin leading to a lingering, sapid finish of graphite. I am impressed by how Arianna has managed to keep this elegance in such a warm vintage, a masterclass of balance and expressiveness of one of the best winemaking regions in the world, Sicily. Warning: not the ‘Jammy’ Sicilian wine you’d expect, might be a bit of an acquired taste but I am happy for our members to try something different and a ‘natural wine’. 100% Nero d’Avola.
